2009 Credit Union National Debating Challenge

Titchfield High School from the parish of Portland, is this year’s Credit Union Treasure Chest Debating challenge champion. The all- girls team clinched the win from the all-boys team from Munroe College to take home the prized Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League’s (JCCUL) trophy.

The teams pitted their debating skills against each other last Friday at the finals of the competition at the Knutsford Court, Hotel in Kingston when they debated the Moot:

“Be it resolved that the common bond of the Achilles’ heel of the Credit Union Movement”. The champions scored the win with 169 points to Monroe’s 163. Decarteret College, from Mandeville, placed third in the competition.

Scores of students and children were at the venue to witness the crowning of the champions. They were treated to first class entertainment by Jamaica’s own Michael Jackson and dance hall artiste G Whiz with the popular hitsingle “ MiLife soon sort out”,

JCCUL organizes the finals of the Debating Challenge while parish credit unions sponsor and organizes the elimination rounds of the competition that began in October.

Portland Co-operative Credit Union sponsored the Titchfield High School team while St. Elizabeth sponsored Munroe College. Manchester Credit Union was the sponsor of the Decartaret High School team.


 



Dollar Wizard Presentations

The Credit Union Movement is committed to providing all students with information about credit unions and good money management skills. This year we will be providing Dollar Wizard Presentations to high school students between the age groups of 13 and 17 who are studying the business subjects.

Students who have experienced our presentation have learned:

  •  The seven co-operative principles
  •  How credit unions operate
  •  The benefits of saving with a credit union

Students have also been informed on how to effectively use money management instruments such as budgeting and interest calculation.

Credit Union Treasure Chest Savings Competition



Janoya Grant, Treasure Chest National Top Saver for 2008 collects her prize of $10,000.00 from Mr. Glen Francis, General Manager of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL).

Janoya was the top saver in the competition that ran from March 16 – May 16.  The competition is organized by JCCUL and received wide participation from credit unions island wide.
